Somehow, “men suing women for calling them bad dates” is becoming a trend. First, it was a guy in Chicago who decided to sue women who’d talked about him in the Chicago chapter of the “Are We Dating the Same Guy?” Facebook group, now a California man has launched a similar crusade against the network of groups with his own $2.6 million lawsuit against more than 50 women.

Stewart Lucas Murrey is suing the women for “false and defamatory” reviews made on the Los Angeles chapter of the “Are We Dating the Same Guy?” Facebook group. Murrey claims that the comments made in the private Facebook group have ruined his love life, damaged his reputation and “cost him millions” in missed job opportunities.

The women being sued argue that Murrey is using the courts to try and intimidate them. Recently, a judge ruled that one of the women did nothing wrong by sharing her opinion of Murrey in the group, while another told the Times of London that the first time she met Murrey was when he came by her home to drop off the lawsuit.

The women fighting back against Murrey’s lawsuit are hoping the courts will rule in their favor, and are relying on anti-SLAPP laws designed to deter frivolous lawsuits. The judge granted an anti-SLAPP motion after finding no evidence of conspiracy.

The Los Angeles chapter of the group has over 50,000 members, and sister versions of the group are available in many major cities across the globe, spanning almost every continent. At the time the post was made about Murrey, the group only had some 10,000 members, but at least 50 were able to share their negative experiences with Murrey spanning both encounters on dating apps and in person.

In addition to the lawsuits filed in Chicago and Los Angeles, men are fighting back against the network of groups online, with subreddits like r/AWDTSGisToxic boasting almost 5,000 members and Facebook groups like “Victims of Are We Dating the Same Person” boasting over 31,000. Many users of the subreddit are willing to help men gain access to the groups to see what is being said about them so they can act accordingly, and a pinned post offers advice on how men who are posted in these groups can work to have the posts taken down by Facebook.

One comment made by an anonymous user of the subreddit reads, “I’m currently posted on this site, it’s totally wrecked my life, I’ve been stalked harassed, attacked and slandered all over Canada, all because I said I wasn’t attracted to her, idk what to do anymore.”

He concluded, “I wish I had money to sue her but I don’t. Hope someone one day shuts it down period.”
